How to Draw a Cartoon Face for Beginners
Start with simple circles and guidelines, then build a friendly cartoon face with big features and clear expression.
Materials needed
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Sketch paper
- Black fineliner
- Colored pencils
Step 1
Draw a soft head shape
Sketch a large circle, then gently flatten the sides and add a small curve for the chin. Cartoon heads do not need perfect symmetry.
Step 2
Add friendly guidelines
Place a vertical line down the center and a horizontal eye line slightly below the middle. These guides keep the face balanced.
Step 3
Build the eyes and brows
Draw two large oval eyes on the guide line. Add thick brows above them and tilt the brows to create a happy, curious, or surprised mood.
Step 4
Place the nose and smile
Use a tiny rounded triangle or button shape for the nose. Under it, sketch a wide smile and add a small lower lip curve.
Step 5
Finish with ears, hair, and ink
Attach simple ears between the eye and nose area, block in the hairstyle with big chunks, then trace the clean lines with a fineliner.
Beginner tips
- Keep the first lines light so you can adjust proportions.
- Big eyes and clear eyebrows make expressions easier to read.
- Try three mouth shapes before choosing the funniest one.
